10 Simple Putting Tips for the Average Golfer

I’m certainly not a teaching golf professional—and never will be. But after studying the science of putters for many years, I’ve found myself offering suggestions to golfers of all skill levels.

So here are 10 simple “do’s” that can help you roll the ball more confidently and consistently:

  1. Keep your head still. Don’t move it until the ball has rolled 3–4 feet away.

  2. Missing to the right? Move the ball slightly forward in your stance.

  3. Missing to the left? Move the ball slightly back.

  4. Roll it past the hole. Always hit your putts about 6 inches past the cup—never up, never in!

  5. Downhill putts? Play a little more break.

  6. Uphill putts? Play a little less break.

  7. Lag practice matters. Spend more time practicing long putts than 3-footers.

  8. Set your line, then trust your speed. Speed is king.

  9. On side-hill putts, aim for the pro’s side of the cup (the high side).

  10. Get a little help. See your local golf professional for a lesson—or, of course, pick up a new Bell Putter.

Simple, clear, and proven over time. Practice these, and you’ll shave strokes off your game.
