The Art and Science of Putter Making

About 35 years ago, I read an interesting article that asked whether putter making was more art or science. At the time, I was relatively new to golf club assembly and repair, and I could only see the science. Our job as clubmakers was simple: help golfers play better. To heck with the artsy stuff—that was my first thought.

Now, more than 35 years later, I’ve read hundreds—maybe thousands—of articles and studies on putter design, performance, and engineering. And yes, just about every article available on both the science and the artistry of putter making. Along the way, I’ve enjoyed countless conversations with golf professionals, amateurs, and putter designers about the many styles and features that make a good putter.

While I still begin with the science and the application of solid engineering principles, I now find myself evaluating putter features and specifications with an appreciation for both science and artistry.

As we enter 2026, our job remains the same: help golfers play better. We know there is no perfect putter—only the putter that helps you, our friend and customer, play better golf. To that end, we stay focused.
